Progress is not always linear — and that's okay.
It’s completely normal to have good days and harder days. Setbacks or increased symptoms don't mean you're moving backward. Think of recovery as a winding path, not a straight line. Every step — even the tough ones — is part of the healing process.
You are not “starting over.”
Flares happen, especially when stressors or triggers are present. These moments are opportunities to apply your tools — pacing, grounding, movement strategies — and strengthen your recovery skills.
Use the Stoplight System to guide your activities.
🟢 Green: Activities that feel manageable and safe — keep doing these regularly.
🟡 Yellow: Slightly challenging activities — do these with pacing and support.
🔴 Red: Activities that trigger overwhelming symptoms — pause and revisit with a plan or support later.
This system helps you listen to your body without avoiding all activity.
Avoiding movement or leaving the house can increase symptoms over time..
While it might feel safer in the moment, consistently avoiding movement or social situations can actually reinforce the brain's stress response. Gentle, supported exposure helps re-train your brain that these activities are safe and build resilience for future experiences.
Movement is medicine — even small steps matter.
Intentional, guided movement (like walking, stretching, or gentle exercises) helps rewire brain-body connections. Consistency is key.
Joy in movement is powerful.
Choose activities that make you smile — dancing in your kitchen, walking in nature, or playing with a pet. Enjoying movement helps your brain associate it with safety and pleasure, not fear or symptoms. This is a vital part of retraining your nervous system.
Your brain is capable of change.
Neuroplasticity — your brain’s ability to adapt and learn — is a powerful tool. With repetition, support, and patience, your brain can build new, more functional patterns.
